What is exterior wood cladding?

Wood cladding is an exterior cladding system for walls or facades made up of sheets, also known as planks, strips or clapboard, which are fastened to a metal or wooden framework, which in turn is fastened to the wall.

Exterior wood cladding not only protects the facade of your home or terrace against weather, cracks and damp, but also adds a warm, natural look to your home. Wood cladding can be combined with insulation to improve the building's thermal performance.

Exterior wood cladding is sometimes referred to as "exterior wood panelling" (the visual aspect being similar, but the panelling being an interior cladding).

Clin cladding: the most popular wood cladding material

Of the various types of wood siding, clapboard siding is the most famous and widely used. Wood clapboard cladding consists in covering the entire facade of the house by superimposing wood clapboards (which are special wooden planks used for cladding) one on top of the other (the planks overlap), leaving no trace of the covered facade.

This type of wood cladding is aesthetically pleasing, durable and easy to install, protecting the facade from rain and other hazards while insulating the protected exterior wall.

Other types of wood cladding: interlocking or clerestory

The other two types of exterior wood cladding are interlocking (the wood cladding boards are interlocked with one another) and clerestory (the cladding boards are openwork, separated by a gap of around 50 mm), both of which offer a different aesthetic finish.

In addition to these variations, wood cladding strips can be installed vertically or horizontally, for a look that's even more to your liking.

Why and when opt for exterior wood cladding?

Wood cladding is ideal for protecting a house wall or terrace if you want an aesthetically pleasing finish. If you're looking for elegant, modern and timeless cladding for an exterior wall, then exterior wood cladding is a choice you won't regret.

Wood cladding for exterior walls should be preferred, however, if you have easy access to the wall in question, and are prepared to treat it from time to time. Cladding wood, although highly resistant (class 3, 4 wood), is still subject to slight color changes, fungal attack, etc.

However, you can opt for class 5 siding wood, which has unlimited resistance over time, but is not very environmentally friendly, or you can opt for autoclaved siding wood, which is heat-treated and heated to better resist wear and tear.

How do I choose my exterior cladding wood?

When choosing your cladding wood, you need to decide :

  • Your primary objective: do you want an aesthetically pleasing finish? Insulating performance? A compromise between the two with the least possible maintenance?
  • The style you want: clapboard (overlapping), interlocking wood cladding boards, wood cladding panels separated by a gap...
  • Color: wood cladding lets you choose from a wide variety of colors, derived from wood species (bamboo, chestnut, etc.).
  • The thickness of the wood cladding you want.

Determine the answers to these questions, and you'll be able to dress your facade with the ideal exterior wood cladding for your project.
